1974. Christian Morin, clarinettiste doué, se voit remettre le prix Sydney Bechet de l'Académie du Jazz. Emue, sa mère s'exclame: « Ah si ton père avait vu ça ! » Mais le père de Christian n'en saura jamais rien. Il a disparu juste avant la fin du service militaire de son fils, le laissant promis à un « banal » avenir de graphiste/dessinateur de pub. Ainsi s'ouvrent ces souvenirs, qui commencent dans le Bordeaux populaire de l'après-guerre, celui de l'imprimerie paternelle, des hôtels de passe mais aussi des professeurs qui lançaient : « Morin, arrête de rêver ! » Christian Morin raconte comment il découvrit le cirque, la musique, et enfin la radio, qu'il écoutera longtemps avant d'y travailler.
